Definition Of Stress
Most researchers’ definition of stress points to the body responses (be it physical, mental or emotional) to events that results to bodily or mental tension. When you are excited or threatened by the events that happen in your life, your body will normally respond to them.
Some stress can be positive and pushes a person to move forward and beat deadlines or overcome problems. But at certain levels, when stress becomes too heavy to handle and gets out of control, it can ruin a person’s performance, health, and relationships. Stressors are anything that causes stress. They may include:
- people
- situations
- pressures
- or indeed your own self
Stress as a result of external or internal factors may either bring you up or tear you down. It all depends on how you perceive it. You may think of something that is too stressful for you but others find it as something to be enjoyed.
Common External Causes Of Stress
-
Abusive Superiors: Bosses love to boss around and they’re really good at it. Sometimes we want to evaporate from their presence or we’d like to snap them out of our system. Having a superior who is very difficult to deal with will most likely ruin your every day in the workplace.
-
Work: Beating deadlines may give you positive stress but when they come too often, you need to evaluate your work performance and work on projects on time. Do not wait for deadlines to catch you.
-
Relationship Intricacies: Rocky relationships or break-ups can cause stress especially to the person who is hurt the most. Once your heart is broken, every thing else is affected.
-
Financial Troubles: When the bills keep on coming and the next pay day is still far off, then you know you’re in trouble.
-
Illness: When somebody is sick in the family, it’s usually the mothers who get stressed, especially if they are working moms. With all the high hospital bills and medical expenses to be paid the stress is made all the worst.
-
Being Too Busy: Sometimes you can perform so many different roles in your life that it makes you feel like giving up. All your roles demand high attention from you; you don’t know where to begin or what to do first.
-
Children And Family: When kids misbehave or if any member of the family is being irresponsible, they can be a source of stress too.
Common Internal Causes Of Stress
-
Unrealistic Goals: Never set an expectation too high for you to reach.
-
Pessimism: Add hopes and rainbows in your life. Sometimes being negative is contagious so be optimistic. Change your perspectives.
-
Perfectionism: Remember that human as we are, we all have flaws. When you commit mistakes, it only proves you’re human. So don’t be too hard on yourself.
-
Lack Of Trust In Others: Not being able to trust your fellow man leaves you always on the lookout and can sometimes lead to paranoia.
-
Inability To Accept Truth: Do not try to alter facts. Accept them and learn from them. There’s no use complaining about something you cannot change.
-
Inability To Accept Others: Never impose on others the change that you think would be good for them. Try to see the person as he is and take him or her as that. Do not be stressed over what others are.
